Link building is essential for SEO.
But how do you build powerful backlinks, when you are a complete beginner?
This guide is going to help you do that, exactly the way you should.
Keeping aside all the complicated and investment-demanding link building techniques, I’m sharing some of my best strategies to build a strong profile of backlinks for your website and blog.
1. Guest Blogging
When you write a blog post for a similar site in your niche, it is called guest blogging.
It sure takes time, and you might also think:
Why the heck I should publish an article on someone else’s website?
Guest blogging has a huge potential to build natural links that Google loves. Apart from that, it also helps you build a strong connection with big players in your industry.
Let’s take a look at how you can identify targeted blogs in your niche to write guest posts:
Method #1 – Use Google Search
The easiest way to find relevant blogs to guest publish your posts is by searching Google for “Niche + Guest Post” or “Niche + Write for Us.”
For instance, if your niche is fitness, you will search for “fitness guest post” or “fitness blogs write for us.”
I would highly recommend you to install the SEOquake browser extension. It will show you the domain authority, backlink index and other important metrics below every URL in Google search.
Method #2 – Use SEMrush
If you can afford to buy an SEO tool, I would highly recommend you to use SEMrush. It is a suite of SEO tools that’ll help virtually perform ANY SEO tasks and analysis.
Go to SEMrush, and put in your URL in the domain bar.
The result report will show you all your organic competitors.
Copy the website of one of your competitors and put it in the domain bar to begin another search.
Next, click on the backlinks to reveal all the websites that link to your competitor’s site.
The report will show you all the dofollow and nofollow links the site gets. You can click on export to download this report as a CSV file and upload it to Google sheets.
You can pitch all of the blogs from the report and ask them to link to your article. But only if your article is better than your competitors.
2. Broken Link Building
Broken link building is a rather easy way to get backlinks. The only thing it takes is TIME.
Here’s how it works:
First, you identify top blogs and websites in your niche. You can use SEO tools like SEMrush, Ahrefs, or SERPstat.
The next thing is to create a relevant and quality article on that topic. If you already have one, great.
Simply reach out to the website’s owner, telling them you find a dead link on their page and ask them to consider linking to your article instead.
It is not as complicated or hard to do as it sounds. You only got to have a little patience and consistency to find broken links and writing the pitch email to the site owners.
3. Forum Link Building
Let me make myself VERY clear:
I am not talking about forum backlinks. I’m not telling you to submit your blog to forum directories or publish your links in forum threads.
Instead, I want you to build connections with forum moderators. An effective way to get your targeted audience to know you and your work online is getting featured by forum thread moderators.
Let’s say you have a blog on online marketing. A good choice of forum for you will be WarriorForum.
Warrior forums have thousands of threads, and you only got to make friends with a few of these thread moderators. They will help you get featured on top of the threads and will give you special link opportunities repeatedly.
Doing it will help you get natural link building opportunities from forum members as well.
You can find forums in your niche by searching for your “niche + forum” in Google search. For instance, if you are writing about marketing, Google search for “marketing forums”.
Infographics can get you tons of backlinks. The two things that make an infographic successful are:
- The data behind it
- The design
If the data shown in the infographic isn’t cited correctly and is vague, it won’t get much attention from authority sites. Similarly, if the data isn’t predicted in a nice and attractive way, it won’t get much shared.
So, before you put up an infographic, make sure you have credible sources and impressive design.
There are several ways you can get an infographic for your blog. First is by using tools like Visme and Canva. Using these two online tools, you can self design an infographic.
A tool called embed code generator will help you create HTML code for your readers that’ll allow them to display your infographic on their website while giving you a proper citation and a backlink.
I would highly recommend you to write a blog post around the infographic too. This will help you avoid issues of thin pages in the future.
5. Create a Tool
Sites like Pingdom and HubSpot have millions of backlinks. A significant share of HubSpot’s backlinks are links to its tools. Whether free or premium, HubSpot has built a profile of amazing tools that people use and love to share.
Similarly, Pingdom speed test and other tools have way more backlinks than their blog. Which makes it super clear that people like to link to online tools.
You can create an online tool such as a “new blog cost calculator” or tax calculator etc.
You don’t have to be a coding or programming expert to do this. Take the help of online tools like Ucalc, it will help you build a tool from scratch without any code.
You only need an idea, and you can easily outsource the coding, marketing, and management part. Once your tool becomes popular, it will be a massive traffic attraction as well as a link magnet.
When you are impressed by someone’s work, product, or services, send them a testimonial.
A testimonial is your spoken endorsement for someone you know, a service/product that you used, or for a course you’ve enrolled in.
Every blogger or influencer in your niche loves testimonials as long as they are honest and positive. A simple testimonial like:
Hey [influencer name]
I absolutely love your work. Your articles/course/product on [your favorite topic] have helped me [results you’ve achived].
I liked [mention what you liked in the article/course/product].
I highly recommend your [product/service/course] to my audience on my blog, [a link to your blog].
P.S. I don’t mind if you use my email as a testimonial 😀.
If you can face the camera, a video testimonial would be fantastic. Chances of an influencer using a video testimonial are much higher than text.
Just don’t forget to mention a link to your site in the testimonial. You can post the testimonial on social networks like Facebook and Twitter as well.
7. Roundup Posts
Blog posts which include experts from an industry answering a particular question are called roundup posts. For instance, “10 business icons share their favorite book”.
Expert roundups are amazing link baits, and you know why?
Because they are backed by authoritative data and social trust.
By mentioning influencers in your roundup posts, you can quickly get them to share your content with their huge audiences. Just like that, you can also win the trust of their audience.
So when you create a roundup post, make sure you reach out to everyone you’ve linked to.
Reach out to all of them once again when the post gets published. Thank all the experts in your post for their contribution and request them to share it. Chances are 9 out of 10 people who will share your roundup post and link to it in their future posts.
8. Interview Posts
An excellent way to introduce yourself and your blog are doing interviews with experts in your niche.
You can use either interview someone, or get interviewed. Both will help you build dofollow backlinks from authoritative sites.
This strategy is pretty simple, but most of the time, you won’t get a backlink right away. If you get interviewed, you will receive a backlink to your site.
However, if you are interviewing someone, chances are they won’t link back to you. Because they don’t need to, and there’s no necessity to do it.
Instead, those experts will share your content with their audience. With their social media followers and possibly with their email subscribers as well.
You can also interview small business owners and bloggers. They won’t make you authority backlinks now, but they may surely once they grow their business.
9. Automate Social Media
Social media takes A LOT of time. Especially when you are the one who is creating content.
So, it’s better to start automating it.
These social media automation tools will allow you to schedule all your blog posts as well as other content. Once you schedule your blog posts, the tool will automatically post it on your profiles.
Missnglettr also suggests you popular #tags by analyzing your entire blog post, which is absolutely amazing.
The next step is reaching out to authority bloggers who like, comment, retweet or re-share your content. Ask them if they could link to your post from one of their posts or if you could write a guest post for them or if they could give an interview.
It saves time and it helps you focus on outreaching.
10. Guest Podcasting
Become a guest on a podcast show in your niche.
It will help you get authority backlinks, credibility and establish you as an expert in your niche.
This one probably the toughest one to crack when you are just a beginner but once you get that one show and you deliver your best, it’s the easiest way to earn backlinks.
You can build a relationship with fellow podcasters on social media, so you can give them a chance to know you.
It won’t work of you go and straight ask them for interviewing you. Make them feel you are a good guest for their show by sharing similar content on the topics the podcast host talks about.
If you are willing to request your way on a podcast, a good way will be to prepare an outreach campaign first. Tools like NinjaOutreach will help you create an outreach campaign based on your niche so you can get it right without looking like a complete beginner.
Let them invite you to their show by showing them you know your niche and you have the guile to talk about it like an expert.
Once you get that one show, you are set to get more interview requests without outreach.
11. List Posts
When you are starting a new blog, list posts are the best bet to get backlinks.
They are so easy to write and are highly shareable, you will get that initial social boost you need to popularize your new blog. People love these articles because they can easily find what they are looking for without reading tons of words.
It isn’t very hard to find a topic to create a list post on.
For example, if you are in a health niche you can write a post on “7 best fitness bands.” You could also write about the “15 best positions to sleep.” LIst posts don’t have to contain a product every time.
12. Link Out To Influencers
Influencers like getting more attention. Most of them will payback this attention and this is where you get the benefit from influencers in your niche.
When you are writing a blog post, search for articles published by experts and influencers in your niche.
If they have an ebook, mention it as a resource by linking to it. If they happen to publish Youtube videos, you can also use their videos in your blog posts.
When you do that, just let them know via twitter or email and tell them to share it with their followers if they like. If you do this repeatedly and build a connection with even one influencer, you’ll get a chance of getting a dofollow backlink from their blog.
Adding outbound links to your blog posts also build trustworthiness, and will help you rank higher in Google search results.
13. Quiz Baiting
A quiz is a link bait that has never failed.
No matter you are a beginner or an established blogger, once you create and publish a genuinely helping quiz, it will attract links. Not just any link, quality and relevant backlinks.
An interactive media like quiz helps people out, making them joyful at the same time. You don’t know the answer and you just keep on answering questions in hope of a fascinating result.
That’s why quizzes are an amazing link building asset. If it goes viral, then it can make you tons of advertisement money too.
If you want to create a quiz for free, I would recommend a tool called Interact. Build a quiz for free and make it super helpful and curiosity igniter at the same time.
It’s hard to create a quiz like that for the first time, so try two or three different variations before settling for one.
These are the 13 strategies that are absolutely easy for a beginner to start building backlinks. Tactics like quiz baits are something advanced bloggers will want to try too.
The key is to stick to one strategy at a time, and keep consistency.
