Hitting the Publish button on your new blog post is not the last thing you do when creating content.
In fact, it is just the beginning. You need to work on driving traffic to the content that you worked so hard to create. Otherwise, your valuable content wouldn’t serve its purpose.
So how do you drive traffic to a blog post? How do you promote your content to the right audience?
There’s no one method to drive traffic to your blog. You can pick one or a combination of sites depending on how much time you are willing to put in.

There’s no question that most people go to Facebook for entertainment and information. You can get your content in front of an audience by creating a Facebook page or a Facebook group where you can announce when you have a new blog post on your website.
If you have a budget and want to speed up the process, you can use Facebook ads to promote your blog or blog posts. You would need to learn how to set up a Facebook Business account and the basics of running ads on Facebook.
Second, to Facebook, Instagram has over 1 billion monthly users, most of whom are between 14 to 24 years old.
The great thing about Instagram is that it has higher engagement compared to other social media platforms, including Facebook. People are more likely to engage with an Instagram post.
When using Instagram for blog promotion, be sure to use the best photos you can find and write persuasive captions that grab a person’s attention. There are also tons of tips on using hashtags and Instagram Stories to get more views and engagement from your posts.
Unlike Facebook, captions on Instagram can not include links, so the only option here would be to place your blog’s link in your profile.
As of April 2019, there are 330 million monthly users on Twitter.
Of these users, 9% use the platform daily. Twitter is the third most popular social media platform for content marketers and bloggers. A recent study found that people are more 31 times more likely to remember what they saw on Twitter.
Twitter is known to be a dynamic platform, which makes it a preferred network for news publications. Some bloggers promote their content on Twitter using click to tweet boxes along with a trending topic to get more engagement.
With over 600 million members, LinkedIn is not far behind the social media race. Known as a platform for professionals to connect with each other, LinkedIn is ideal for content related to business, work, and productivity.
LinkedIn accounts for half the traffic generated for B2B sites.
Depending on your blog’s niche, LinkedIn may or may not be the best platform to promote your blog.
Choosing LinkedIn as a platform to share a blog post about productivity in the workplace makes more sense than sharing an article about planning a family trip to Disneyland.
Since Google acquired YouTube in 2006, it has become the second-largest search engine in the world.
If you like shooting videos and have the means and resources to do it, then creating YouTube videos related to your blog’s niche is a great way to get more traffic to your blog.
Quora is a site where people can ask and/or answer questions about any topic.
In just a few years, it has grown to 300 active monthly users and is considered to be a great platform to build authority while promoting content.
Signing for a Quora account is free, and you can promote your blog while answering questions about your industry.
Imgur is a necessary but fully functional photo-sharing social network. To date, it has 300 million users. Over 1.5 million images are uploaded to Imgur daily. 84 percent of Imgur users are male and 91 percent are gamers.
This platform is famous for internet memes, GIFs, and funny photos of pets, people, and events. Imgur users can vote posts to go bump the content up the ranking.
Reddit is a social sharing site that is mostly text-based, with users having the ability to upvote or downvote content.
Its platform has 330 million active monthly users. A Reddit user spends an average of 16 minutes per visit, making it one of the most engaging social networks to date.
Before sharing your content on Reddit, check the rules, and follow them accordingly, or else you can get banned.
Reddit has hundreds of categories called subreddits, and you need to share your blog’s content in the right subreddit.
9. Email list
If you read a lot of advice about getting traffic to your blog, you might have heard the phrase, “The money is in the list.” The “list” refers to the people who have signed up for your email list.
These are people who are most likely to read your future content and become a customer somewhere down the line.
Subscribers are then added to a sequence of email messages, which leads to an offer — a paid course or ebook — which the subscriber can purchase.
10. Guest post
Guest posting is when you offer to create a blog post and publish it to another site.
The purpose of guest posting is to pick a website that is getting more traffic and get that site’s audience to visit your site as well. Big brands like Intel, Evernote, and Salesforce have their employees and CEO guest blogging for authority websites in their industry.
While you might not land a guest post on big websites, you can always pick smaller but reputable sites that are looking for guest contributors. The important thing is that you create content outside your blog, build a brand, and expand your reach.
Pinterest is the fifth most popular social network, with over 56 million users in the US and 200 million monthly users in total.
Images are saved or “pinned” in boards or shared in other social networks, and most images are linked to a website with a more detailed version of the photo.
Pinterest is a massive hit with women who use it to save pictures of craft projects, baking recipes, and wedding ideas.
There’s no rule in what kind of content should go in Pinterest, so any type of blog is welcome here. Many case studies prove Pinterest can boost traffic to your blog when done right. Use Canva or Photoshop to create photos in Pinterest layout and start pinning!
People who started blogging in the early ’00s will probably remember Stumbleupon and how easy it was to post a link and get a bit of traffic to your site.
This content discovery platform closed down in June 2018 to be replaced by a similar site called Mix.
Like Stumbleupon, people can sign up for Mix and discover curated content according to their interests.
Promoting a blog post is easy with Mix. All you have to do is sign up and create several “Collections” where you can add existing content or a link to your blog.
Flipboard is a content discovery app available for mobile devices. The app has over 145 million users and is installed in 300 million devices.
Similar to Pinterest and Mix, you can create your own Flipboard feed according to your interest while sharing your own blog’s content by creating a magazine.
Easy Retweet is a site where users can retweet other people’s content on Twitter in exchange for free credits and a chance to get retweeted by other users with a more substantial following.
You can also add your blog’s RSS feed for easy access to your content.
Snapchat is a multimedia social network that has 100 million daily users, with 69 percent made up of teenagers ages 13 – 17. Snapchat is famous for its face filters, which can transform your face into a dog, a goddess, or a demon.
The average time a user spends on Snapchat every day is 25 – 30 minutes.
One way of promoting your blog is to post entertaining videos, which can be anything from a “behind-the-scenes” style content to an inspirational pep talk.
The other “secret” to growing your blog’s traffic using Pinterest is to join group boards in your niche. Instead of following Pinterest accounts, you need to search specifically for Boards. Group boards have a group owner and several collaborators.
Group boards will usually have instructions on how to join in the main page.
Joining group boards will get your content in front of more people in your niche. However, you need to return the exposure by pinning content from other members of the group.
Forums have been around for a long time, and although they are waning in popularity, it doesn’t mean that people stopped using them entirely.
For instance, Android users and developers have a large and active forum called XDA, where there are thousands of exchanges between users since the forum’s creation.
Be aware, however, that forums are made to help out other members of the community and not spam them with irrelevant links. So before you promote your blog, make it a priority to post helpful information first.
Medium is a free blogging platform, much like WordPress.com and Blogger.
You can publish original content or import existing content from your blog. The beauty of Medium is the potential of your content to go viral and get a spot in Medium’s featured stories.
Medium is home to content creators, big and small. You’ll find topics in a wide variety of industries and interests. If you publish content on Medium, you can use it to link to your blog or a landing page for collecting email subscriptions.
Just like Quora, Yahoo Answers is a social network where people can ask or answer questions about any topic.
To ask or answer a question, you need to have a Yahoo account.
There is a point system that determines a limit on how many questions you can ask or answer. Askers can choose the Best Answer and those who get Best Answer badges can become a Top Contributor.
Viral Content Bee is a social sharing network where members can share each other’s content in exchange for credits.
You need to sign up for a free account, connect your Twitter and Facebook profiles and assign topics for your content. Once done, you can start promoting other people’s content on your social media account (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Mix, Tumblr, etc.)
Bloglovin’ is a social network of bloggers who share and promote each other’s content. When you sign up for Bloglovin,’ you need to connect your Facebook, Twitter, and verify your website.
You can then follow other Bloglovin’ users and share their posts. You can connect your blog’s RSS feed, so it shows in your profile and on your followers’ timelines.
Triberr is another social network of bloggers who promote each other’s stuff. The difference is that you can build a tribe or join other tribes.
Tribe owners are called chiefs, and they can accept you into their tribes. Ideally, you should join a tribe that has a large following to increase your blog’s chances of getting more traffic. The larger your tribe, the better.
Feedly is an RSS aggregator or a content curation tool to organize articles and blog posts from around the internet.
You can add your blog’s RSS to Feedly, so it shows up when people search for keywords related to your blog’s niche. Once you’ve set up your RSS, you can add Feedly as a social sharing button in your blog posts.
Zest is an online website and a mobile app for curating content about digital marketing. To date, it has over 100,000 articles, podcasts, and videos dedicated to marketing topics.
You can apply to be a contributor to promote your own content.
The catch is that your blog topic should be related to marketing like social media, affiliate marketing, product marketing, SEO, community growth, marketing news, paid advertising, email marketing, and mobile marketing.
Outbrain is a paid advertising platform wherein your content is promoted on other websites. Your content will show up as a box with a link on the end of blog posts in a designated host site.
Outbrain follows the Cost Per Click (CPC) model, which means you will be charged per number of clicks according to an amount you set for CPC. You can assign a budget cap and once that is reached, the ad campaign stops.
Quuu Promote is similar to Outbrain as it is a paid method of promoting content. The difference is that content promotion in Quuu Promote happens within the social network on a specified category.
So only other Quuu users can see the promoted post, much like a Facebook ad. To promote your content on this platform, you have to subscribe to a monthly plan starting at $40/promotion.
Interact Quiz Maker is a tool for creating Buzzfeed-style quizzes as a way to hook people into signing up for your email list or visiting your site. You can create three types of quizzes: Personality, Scored, and Assessments.
You can create quizzes from scratch or choose from over 800+ templates. Creating quizzes are free, but adding an email optin form requires a paid subscription plan (starts at $17/month).
28. Blog comments
Leaving well-written comments on other blogs that are similar to yours (but are more popular) is a great way to demonstrate your knowledge about a certain topic. At the same time, you can leave a link to your website when filling out the comment section.
This method is nothing new, and successful bloggers have claimed to do it in their early days.
Podcasts have grown in popularity, and it seems every big name on the internet has a podcast.
Not only is it a great way to promote your blog, but it’s also an excellent way to reach a new group of people who might not have seen your blog.
It does take time and a little bit investment to set up a podcast, so this method is not for everyone. But if you want to establish yourself as an authority in your industry, having a podcast is a great strategy.
If you don’t have a podcast, you can consider being interviewed in one.
We Heart It is best known for its extensive collection of inspirational images and lifestyle articles focused on fashion and pop culture.
Juxtapost is described as a minimalist content discovery and content sharing site, which allows for side-by-side comparisons.
Each image has a button for “More like this,” which will then pull up similar content. Signing up for Juxtapost is free and you can add your content and assign it to a category.
You can create a collection of content called post boards and invite other members to collaborate with you.
Tumblr is a microblogging social network that is popular among teens and young adults. It ranks as the 7th biggest social networkin the world. As of April 2019, this platform has 463 million blogs.
Tumblr is unique because most of the content generated by its users is often authentic, witty, and honest. Content can be images, videos, links, and text, which are called tumblelogs. Tumblelogs can be liked and users can follow other users and share their content.
Blokube is a social network and content stream for bloggers. It is built by fellow blogger Devesh Sharma, from WPKube.
You can post your blog posts’ link on Blokube and the moderators will review and promote your content on the network. It is a great community for internet marketers and bloggers.
LiveJournal, as the name suggests, was created to be a digital diary to record personal life events. Just like any social network, journals can be shared with the public, and users can comment or leave a “heart” on other people’s journals.
LiveJournal was acquired by a Russian media company called SUP Media in 2007 and has transferred its servers from the US to Russia since then. The site changed its terms of service to comply with Russian law.
Slideshare is a site for creating and sharing slide presentations, infographics, documents, and videos. Most of the content here is authoritative and instructional, so if your blog falls under this category, then this is a great place to promote your content.
While competition in this site is generally low, you still have to work on creating presentations that command attention. Of course, it should also add tons of value and have a link back to your blog.
